In the heart of Seoul. In front of Gwanghwamun is a statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin. If you are a Korean, you will feel what this statue means and be moved. And of course, everyone believes that Admiral Yi Sun-shin will still protect our country and Koreans.

Admiral Yi Sun-shin is more than a hero who saved the country in a crisis.

More than 400 years ago from now It was during the Jo-seon Dynasty. In April 1592, Japanese troops arrived in Busan. Japanese troops occupied the capital, Hanyang (now Seoul), in about 20 days, and King Seon-jo of Jo-seon took refuge in the north.

Japan’s King Toyotomi Hideyoshi said, “There are two human ears and one nose. Cut off the nose of the killed Jo-seon people and send them to salt,” and then the Japanese soldiers cut their noses and ears at random, regardless of whether they were soldiers, civilians or men and women of all ages.

Even now, nasal grave and ear grave are located in Kyoto, Japan.

Ryu Seong-ryong, then prime minister, wrote a book called Jing-bi-rok after the war. The book was written after the war to publicize the horrors of war and to prepare for the future. The original version of the book shows a very disorganized style and confusion as shown above.

These letters give a good impression of how the war devastated the people and how hard Ryu Seong-ryong, who wrote the story, wrote it. It was a time when the nation was as confused and dangerous as the dizziness of this writing.

The great heroes of Korea are creative.

Admiral Yi Sun-shin developed a secret weapon. It’s the turtle ship. The turtle ship was a very unique type of ship with its head a dragon and its body armor. The turtle ship was so solid that it was difficult for the ship to invade at that time. Yi Sun-sin used the turtle ship to invade his enemies.

General Yi Sun-shin’s situation was very difficult. It was also due to the strong Japanese army that won almost all of its victories on land, but during the war, Yi Sun-sin was unjustly imprisoned by the government and severely tortured. After that, Yi Sun-sin was released and entered the naval battle with an uncomfortable body.

The Jo-seon army repeatedly lost on land, and fortunately Admiral Yi Sun-shin was at sea. He has won consecutive victories in several major naval battles.

In 1597, the king knew that naval forces were too weak and ordered Yi Sun-shin to work in the Army. However, Yi Sun-shin said, “The naval forces are the key to victory.”

“I still have twelve ships. If we fight with all our might, we can do it.”

In the Battle of Myeong-nyang, he dealt with more than 130 Japanese ships with 12 ships, and destroyed 31 Japanese boats.

This record was unprecedented in the history of the world’s naval battles. (There are many other naval battles, but I will skip them.)

Yi Sun-sin captured or destroyed about 300 of the 500 enemy ships (which joined forces with the Ming Dynasty of China) in his last battle in No-ryang. Yi Sun-shin, who was shot while chasing a fleeing Japanese ship, died in battle, leaving a shining will saying, “I am in a hurry to fight, so don’t say I am dead.”

This marks the end of seven years of long and difficult battles.

It had a huge impact on the three countries, Korea, China and Japan. After the war, Japan was replaced by a regime, and the Chinese Ming Dynasty of that time was later devastated, resulting in the collapse of the country 50 years later.

You will learn many lessons from this battle. At that time, scholars, called Sun-bi, made some betrayal, and ran away every crisis, making the country more difficult. However, the integrity of Admiral Yi Sun-sin protected our country with fidelity and courage.

If you look at Admiral Yi Sun-shin’s statue in front of Gwang-hwa-mun, you can think of it as “The hero who saved the country, the grateful person who made Korea exist now.”

2. 한국의 역사 – 나라를 구한 이순신장군

서울의 한복판. 광화문 앞에는 이순신장군의 동상이 있다. 한국 사람들이라면 이 동상의 의미가 무엇인지, 누구나 느끼고 감격스러워 할 것이다. 그리고 당연히 이순신 장군께서 지금도 우리나라와 한국인들을 지켜주실 거라 모두가 믿고 있다.

이순신 장군은 위기 속에서 나라를 구한 영웅, 그 이상이다.

지금으로부터 400여 년 전. 때는 조선 시대였다. 1592년 4월. 일본군대가 부산에 도착했다. 일본군은 20 여일 만에 수도 한양(지금의 서울)을 점령했고, 조선의 왕 선조는 북쪽으로 피신을 하게 되었다.

일본의 도요토미 히데요시는 “사람의 귀는 둘이고 코는 하나다. 죽인 조선 사람의 코를 잘라 소금에 절여서 보내라.”는 명령을 내렸고, 그러자 일본군들은 군인과 민간인, 남녀노소를 가리지 않고 닥치는 대로 코와 귀를 베었다.

지금도 코무덤, 귀무덤이 일본 교토에 있다.

당시의 총리였던 류성룡은 전쟁 후에 징비록이라는 책을 썼다. 그 책은 전쟁이 끝난 후에 전쟁의 참상을 알리고 미래를 대비하고자 작성했던 책이다. 이 책의 원본은 위에서 보듯이 매우 정돈되지 않은 글씨와 혼란한 상태를 보인다.

이 글씨들은 이 전쟁이 얼마나 백성들을 피폐하게 했는지, 또 글을 쓴 류성룡이 얼마나 힘든 마음으로 글을 썼는지를 잘 느끼게 해준다. 이 글씨의 어지러움 만큼 나라가 혼란스럽고 위험한 위태로운 때 였다.

한국의 위대한 영웅들은 창조적이다.

이순신 장군은 비밀병기를 개발했다. 바로 거북선이다. 거북선은 머리는 용이며, 몸통은 철갑을 두르고 있는 매우 독특한 형태의 배였다. 거북선은 매우 견고하여 당시 배로는 격침하기가 어려웠다. 이순신은 이 거북선을 이용해 적들을 격침 시켰다.

이순신장군이 처한 상황은 매우 어려웠다. 육상에서 거의 전승을 거두는 강한 일본군 때문이기도 했지만, 전쟁 중에 이순신은 정부에 의해 억울하게 감옥에 갇혀 혹독한 문초를 받았다. 그 후에 이순신은 풀려나 불편한 몸으로 해전에 참전하게 되었다.

조선군은 육상에서 패전을 거듭했고, 다행히도 이순신 장군이 바다에 있었다. 그는 여러 주요 해전에서 연전연승을 거두었다.

1597년 왕은 해군전력이 너무 미약함을 알고 이순신에게 육군에 종사하라는 명령을 내렸다. 그러나 이순신은 이런 말을 남겨 수군이야 말로 승리의 요체임을 주장했다.

今臣戰船尙有十二(금신전선상유십이)。出死力拒戰(출사력거전)。則猶可爲也(칙유가위야)。

“신에게는 아직 열두 척의 전선이 있습니다. 죽을힘을 다하여 막아 싸운다면 오히려 할 수 있는 일입니다.”

명량해전에서 그는 12척의 배로 130여 척의 일본 배를 상대했고, 일본 배 31척을 부수었다.

이러한 전과는 세계 해전사에 유례가 없는 기록이었다. (이외에도 수많은 해전이 있으나 생략하겠다)

이순신은 그의 마지막 전투 노량해전에서 (중국 명나라와 힘을 합쳐 일본군을 상대했다) 적선 500여 척 중에 300여 척을 나포하거나 파괴했다. 도망치는 왜선을 추격하다 총탄을 맞은 이순신은 “싸움이 급하니 내가 죽었다는 말을 하지 말라(戰方急愼勿言我死)”는 빛나는 유언을 남기고 전사하였다.

이로써 7년간의 길고 어려웠던 전투가 막을 내리게 되었다.

이 전투는 한국, 중국, 일본 3국에 막대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 전쟁 후 일본은 정권이 교체되었고, 당시의 중국인 명나라는 이후 피폐해져 50년 후 나라가 망하게 된다.

이 전투를 통해 많은 교훈을 얻게 된다. 당시 선비라고 불리던 학자들은 몇몇 배신을 했고, 위기마다 도망쳐 나라가 더욱 어려워지는 경우가 많았다. 그러나 청렴한 이순신 장군은 절개와 용기로 우리나라를 지켜내었다.

광화문 앞에 이순신 장군 동상을 보면, “나라를 구한 영웅, 지금 한국이 있게 해준 고마운 분”이라는 것을 떠올리면 된다.
